Spring Scenic Drives

Spring is the perfect season to fire up the engine and hit the road for those weekend drives. Finding the right route might take some scouting, but the payoff is always worth it. Here in Dallas, we’re lucky to have several solid routes within an hour’s drive, many leading toward the more technical and scenic stretches. One of my favorites kicks off in Pilot Point, winds through Anna, and heads up to Sherman, TX—plenty of open road and great driving conditions. Plus, with the recent addition of G2 Motorsports Park, a high-end track that opened last year, there’s now an incredible spot to really push your car’s limits (if you have the funds to do so, of course). Here are some popular routes throughout the country and rides to enhance those drives:

Legendary Road Carvers | Mazda Miata | Porsche Cayman 981 | Toyota GR86 | Lotus Emira
Legendary Road Carvers | Mazda Miata | Porsche Cayman 981 | Toyota GR86 | Lotus Emira

The Mazda MX-5 Miata excels with its lightweight design, precise handling, and engaging rear-wheel-drive dynamics, making it one of the most fun-to-drive roadsters on the market. Its 2.0L four-cylinder engine delivers a peppy 181 horsepower, complemented by a well-tuned chassis and a near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution. With a stylish, driver-focused interior and an available retractable hardtop (RF model), it balances affordability, reliability, and pure driving enjoyment.

The Porsche Cayman stands out with its mid-engine layout, offering exceptional balance, precise steering, and thrilling driving dynamics. With a range of flat-six engines delivering up to 385 horsepower (GT4 model), a well-crafted interior, and Porsche’s signature build quality, it’s a pure driver’s car with everyday usability.

The Toyota GR86 delivers an exhilarating driving experience with its lightweight design, rear-wheel-drive dynamics, and a 2.4L flat-four engine producing 228 horsepower. With improved torque, sharp handling, and an affordable price, it remains a top choice for enthusiasts seeking a pure, engaging sports car.

The Lotus Emira combines striking supercar looks with Lotus’s signature lightweight engineering and precision handling, making it one of the most driver-focused sports cars available. With a choice of a supercharged V6 or a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a refined yet minimalist interior, and daily usability improvements, it perfectly blends performance, agility, and exclusivity.

The Ducati Scrambler Café Racer combines retro styling with modern performance, featuring an 803cc L-twin engine, clip-on handlebars, and a sporty stance for agile city rides and backroad thrills. The Ducati Scrambler Sixty2, with its approachable 400cc engine and lightweight chassis, offers a smooth, fun ride, making it perfect for new riders or those seeking an easygoing yet stylish machine. The Husqvarna Vitpilen, with its minimalist design and punchy single-cylinder engine, delivers precise handling and an aggressive riding position for a raw, exhilarating experience. Whether carving through mountain twisties or cruising an open highway, each of these bikes captures the pure thrill of motorcycling—where speed, freedom, and adventure come together on the open road.

Ohio State Route 555 - The Triple Nickel (Ohio)

Stretching 62 miles through southeast Ohio, SR 555—also called the Triple Nickel—delivers an exciting mix of sweeping curves and tight turns. Best visited in the fall for its brilliant foliage, this remote road is one of the least traveled in the state, making for a peaceful yet thrilling ride.

US 129 - Tail of the Dragon (North Carolina, Tennessee)

Known as the Tail of the Dragon or Deals Gap, this legendary 11-mile stretch packs 318 curves, making it one of the most technical roads in North America. A must-ride for both motorcyclists and drivers, it attracts thousands annually—though staying within the lane markings is essential.

US 421 - The Snake (Tennessee)

About 200 miles north of Deals Gap, The Snake twists through more than 30 miles of continuous switchbacks and decreasing-radius turns. Running from Mountain City, Tennessee, to the Virginia border, it remains a lesser-known yet exhilarating road for enthusiasts.

Michigan Highway 22 - M-22 (Michigan)

Following the shoreline of Lake Michigan, M-22 spans 117 scenic miles from Onekama around the stunning Leelanau Peninsula. A highlight of the route is Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, one of Michigan’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders.

FM 335, 336, 337 - The Twisted Sisters (Texas)

A favorite among motorcyclists, the Twisted Sisters—FM 335, FM 336, and FM 337—create a nearly 100-mile loop of winding roads through the rugged Texas Hill Country northwest of San Antonio. With sharp turns and dramatic elevation changes, this trio is not for the faint of heart.

Pikes Peak Highway (Colorado)

Ascending to 14,000 feet, the 19-mile Pikes Peak Highway has been home to the legendary Pikes Peak International Hill Climb for over a century. For a $15 toll, drivers can experience breathtaking mountain views and one of the most exhilarating roads in the Rockies.
